Located on Richmond Avenue in Staten Island, the Hellenic Classical Charter School expansion was developed to accommodate the school’s continued growth while supporting its mission of providing a rigorous classical education in a modern learning environment. Designed by Gerakaris Design Studios, the project involved the construction of a new four-story, 53,500-square-foot educational facility with a full cellar, seamlessly complementing the existing campus.
The building features a reinforced concrete flat plate structural system supported by a 30-inch-thick reinforced concrete mat foundation. Due to the cellar extending approximately eight feet below the groundwater table, the project required extensive dewatering operations and carefully engineered support of excavation systems throughout foundation construction. These complex site conditions demanded close coordination between the structural, geotechnical, and construction teams to maintain safety and schedule.
The completed expansion provides modern classrooms, administrative spaces, and educational facilities designed to support the school’s expanding student population while maintaining the high standards of functionality and durability expected of institutional construction. Kel-Mar Designs successfully delivered the project through careful planning, quality construction management, and collaboration with the design team, creating a facility that will serve students and faculty for generations to come.
