Located in the South Bronx, stood an abandoned, laundry building. This 30,000 square foot building was a three story, reinforced concrete structure. Civic Builders, known for partnering with developers and financial resources to build charter schools for under-served communities, arranged for the acquisition of the property and the funding for this $6.5 million project.
The architectural scope of work included asbestos abatement, a new roof, all new interior partitions and fit out. Mechanical work consisted of a new fire alarm system, a new 3-stop elevator and complete new MEP systems. New fenestrations were made in the first floor exterior façade while the sidewalk and curb were replaced.
This now handicapped accessible building has 20 new classrooms, a new gymnasium and opened on time to launch the Heketi School’s inaugural year.
